Case File #006: The Caffeine Caper: Does Dark Roast Really Have More Caffeine?

Some coffee myths refuse to stay behind bars. One of the biggest offenders? The idea that dark roast coffee contains more caffeine than light roast. It sounds logical. Dark roast tastes bolder, looks darker, and packs a heavier punch in flavor. Surely it must have more caffeine, right?

Case Status: Myth busted.

The Case

Ask ten coffee drinkers which roast has more caffeine and chances are most will point to the dark roast. It's a rumor that has been passed around coffee shops and break rooms for years.

But when we pulled the case files and examined the evidence, the story took a surprising turn.

The Evidence

Caffeine is naturally found inside the coffee bean itself. The roasting process doesn't create caffeine and doesn't destroy very much of it either.

The amount of caffeine in your cup depends more on:

  • The type of bean being used
  • How much coffee you brew
  • Whether you measure by scoop or by weight

Roast level is only a small piece of the puzzle.

The Twist

During roasting, coffee beans lose moisture and become lighter. Dark roast beans expand and become less dense.

That means if you measure your coffee by volume using the same scoop, you'll actually get fewer dark roast beans than light roast beans.

Fewer beans means slightly less caffeine.

However, if you measure by weight, the caffeine difference between light and dark roast becomes almost nonexistent.

The Mugshot

Light Roast

  • Slightly more caffeine when measured by volume
  • Brighter, more acidic flavors

Medium Roast

  • Balanced flavor and caffeine levels
  • The crowd favorite

Dark Roast

  • Bold, smoky flavors
  • Slightly less caffeine by scoop, nearly identical by weight

The Final Verdict

Dark roast doesn't earn its reputation because it has more caffeine. It earns it because it tastes stronger and fuller-bodied.

The truth is simple:

Flavor and caffeine are two different crimes.

If you're looking for the biggest caffeine kick, pay attention to how much coffee you're using and the type of bean in your cup, not just how dark it was roasted.

Case Closed

Dark roast may look tougher, but when it comes to caffeine, appearances can be deceiving. Drink what you enjoy, brew it right, and let the flavor do the talking.

No weak cups. Just the truth. ☕🔍
